A New Play Amidst Adversity

In late 2024, actors Tannishtha Chatterjee and Sharib Hashmi were engaged in the production of Ananth Mahadevan’s drama, Pastt Tense, which revolves around the theme of adoption. As they discussed the possibility of collaborating on a comedic play infused with musical elements, Chatterjee received the shocking news of her breast cancer diagnosis.

A mammogram had indicated that her condition was quite advanced. As a single mother caring for her ailing mother, the 45-year-old actress contemplated canceling her meeting with Hashmi.

Reflecting on her situation, she shared, “I questioned my decision to pursue a play.” However, she felt a strong urge to avoid succumbing to despair. Hashmi encouraged her to speak with his wife, a cancer survivor who had faced multiple relapses. Their conversation filled Chatterjee with positivity, leading her to decide to proceed with the play.

The Birth of Breast of Luck

The play, titled Breast of Luck, was crafted while Chatterjee underwent challenging chemotherapy treatments, all while completing her second feature film, Full Plate. Directed by Leena Yadav, Breast of Luck recently debuted at the G5A cultural centre in Mumbai.

An additional performance is scheduled for February 4, coinciding with World Cancer Day, at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, followed by shows on February 11 at the National School of Drama’s annual theatre festival in Mumbai, and on February 13 and 14 in Lucknow.

A Heartwarming Narrative

Breast of Luck features Chatterjee as Sheela, a singer, and Hashmi as Arun, a stockbroker. Their relationship faces challenges due to Sheela’s cancer diagnosis, but Arun provides support through humor and light-hearted songs. The play addresses themes of coping with illness, loneliness, and emotional struggles.

Despite its serious subject matter, Breast of Luck maintains a comedic and uplifting tone. Both Chatterjee and Hashmi perform the songs, with Chatterjee showcasing her classical singing talent.

Facing Challenges with Courage

For Chatterjee, confronting her diagnosis with bravery was crucial. She emphasized the importance of continuing her work on the play and film during her treatment. In an interview, she discussed her journey, the emotional impact of Breast of Luck, and her film Full Plate.

The reception of Breast of Luck has been overwhelmingly positive, with her doctors expressing appreciation for its message of laughter and companionship for those battling serious illnesses.

The Play's Unique Tone

Chatterjee explained that the play's tone was intentionally light-hearted, aiming to find humor even in dark times. She shared a humorous remark from a friend about her diagnosis, which ultimately found its way into the play.

She noted that humor is often undervalued and serves as a vital coping mechanism. Throughout her treatment, she remained focused on her creative projects, using her experiences as inspiration.

Support from Friends and Community

Chatterjee credited her friends for their unwavering support during her journey. She learned the importance of reaching out for help and emphasized that humor, art, and community are essential for healing.

During her treatment, she engaged in reading, practicing music, and spending time outdoors, which contributed to her mental strength.

Future Projects and Aspirations

Chatterjee, an acclaimed actor since the early 2000s, ventured into directing with her first feature, Roam Rome Mein. She expressed interest in adapting Breast of Luck into a film but emphasized the importance of the play's initial reception.

Her upcoming film, Full Plate, features a compelling narrative about a woman’s journey of self-discovery after her husband’s injury. The film draws inspiration from real-life experiences and explores themes of domestic challenges and personal growth.

Casting Choices and Themes

Chatterjee chose Kirti Kulhari and Sharib Hashmi for lead roles based on their suitability for the characters. She aimed to portray complex themes surrounding societal norms and personal liberation through the film's narrative.

The film is set to travel to various festivals before its release, aiming to reach a broader audience.
