Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders - A New Chapter in Crime Thrillers
Introduction to the Sequel
Could Raat Akeli Hai evolve into a series? It's certainly a possibility worth considering.
Plot Overview
Honey Trehan returns with a sequel to his 2020 film, reintroducing the uniquely named police inspector Jatil Yadav, portrayed by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. This new installment, Raat Akeli Hai – The Bansal Murders, promises to delve into societal issues.
The narrative centers around a wealthy Lucknow family entangled with a religious cult leader. Guru Maa, played by Deepti Naval, is believed to have aided the Bansals in coping with their grief and addiction issues. However, her cryptic demeanor raises doubts about her true intentions.
The Crime and Investigation
The brutal murder of the Bansal family during the night leads to a plethora of evidence pointing towards the alleged murderer, Aarav, an addict, while Meera, the main survivor, finds herself under scrutiny from Jatil, despite pressure from his superior, Sameer.

Returning Characters and New Faces
Writer Smita Singh brings back familiar faces, including Ila Arun as Jatil’s mother and Radhika Apte as Radha, who had a significant role in the previous film. Apte’s brief appearance adds a layer of intrigue but ultimately leads nowhere.
Priyanka Setia plays Nisha, a lawyer who aids Jatil in piecing together the mystery, while Revathi portrays Panicker, a forensic expert with a no-nonsense attitude.
Critique of the Film
While the film attempts to create tension, the challenges faced by Jatil seem artificially constructed, lacking the depth and visual atmosphere of its predecessor. The portrayal of the gruesome murders feels diluted, and Meera's reactions to the tragedy appear understated.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui's performance as Jatil remains engaging, showcasing his character's sharpness and determination. The film, spanning 136 minutes, moves swiftly but lacks the gripping essence of a compelling police procedural.
Memorable Moments
Revathi and Priyanka Setia shine in several scenes, particularly when Revathi’s character reenacts the Bansal mansion killings, revealing a chilling expertise in the macabre.
